Iconic Pin Up Girls, Popular Models, & The History Of Beauty

In my mind, old school pin up girls will always have the advantage over the ladies that are considered to be the sex symbols of today’s society.

Why?

Pin Up girls left something to the imagination!

No offense to today’s models…you are all beautiful. But ladies, put some damn clothes on! Keep just a little more covered…It adds the element of mystery…just saying.

Most men I’ve ever come across, do enjoy just a bit of mystery.

The Original Pin-Up Girls…

The concept of Pin Ups actually began in the early 1900’s. Their origins stem from the beginning of the Burlesque movement. Burlesque performers and actresses often utilized photographic post cards or business cards to advertise for upcoming performances. These cards would then be “pinned up” somewhere backstage for exposure.

Fun Fact: These pictures are also sometimes known as “Cheesecake photosCheesecake was an American slang word that became a publicly acceptable term for scantily clad, semi nude, or nude photos of women because pin-up was considered taboo in the early 20th century.

(Funny the things that were considered taboo back then, compared to what is (or should I say Not) considered taboo these days).

Two of the most popular ladies to be considered as the defining start of the pin up movement were Betty Grable and Josephine Baker. They paved the way for later models such as Billie Burke, Marilyn Monroe, and Eartha Kitt. From there, we saw the bikini gain in popularity, along with sports illustrated, playboy magazines, Daisy Dukes, etc.

Nowadays, you’re lucky to see a model with anything more than a small patch of material covering certain areas very sparingly.

This isn’t to say modern day pin up girls don’t exist. They absolutely do! In fact, there are plenty of calendars, posters, and images out there, that feature modern models posing in a similar fashion, dressed in themed attire as the original pin up girls did. So, why don’t they seem to be more popular? Or at least, you don’t see them very often.

Modern Day Models…

Most modern models are scantily clad and leave virtually no room for imagination. They pose in a similar seductive manner as old school pin up girls. The backdrop or props within the newer images, can have a very subtle, yet seductive manner to them, just the same as pin up images. The only major difference is that Pin up girls went through the extra trouble to attach more clothing to their bodies!

Still, the audience seems to be more drawn to the newer, more revealing images over the more subtle approach to Sexy.

So, What actually started the shift in how we perceive “Beauty” now vs. our perception of beauty then?

Did we, as women, just say To hell with it all in terms of modesty? I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar?

Why did we go out of our way to start exposing ourselves in a more brazen way? These days, it’s just widely accepted for a woman to prance around almost naked. We commonly refer to such an approach, as Women Empowerment rather than Lack Of Self Respect.

What is the reason for the guys going along with it? “Well, if you put it out there, I’m gonna look!” sort of perspective?

Did they just get bored with mystery all together and decide they needed to see from word go, what the entire package is? They no longer have to hide their attraction toward the more revealing approach, since it is so widely accepted?

What made modesty almost a thing of the past? (I’ve seen women 20 years older than me...someone’s grandma, wearing Daisy Dukes out there in public! I don’t know when that became a thing!)

Is it really just as basic as “programming”? Have we lost our personal values in exchange for what the ads are telling us we should like? Have we just gotten to a point of acceptance where anything goes? No effort needed? Just lay your soul bare for the taking? And then, take what you can get? No Imagination required if it’s sitting right in front of you?

Life Goes On…

I understand, as with anything in life, Nothing Ever Remains The Same.

I appreciate beauty of the newer images vs the older, just the same. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and I do see plenty of it out there in all fashions. I do, sometimes wish though, I could travel back in a time machine just to get the full experience of a time when women presented themselves and were accepted for their beauty even with more clothing on.
