I find it funny…I went looking for a stock photo of a rocking chair for this article, and had quite a terrible time with it. There are simply not enough photos of rocking chairs.
I actually hold this inanimate object in my mind, with high regard. Think about all of the most simplistic, memorable uses for this one particular type of chair. Yet, it does not rate in the searches. Apparently, they are not photogenic enough, unless of course, there is one for sale by a company of sorts.
Purchasing one is something I highly encourage you to consider, if you do not already own a rocking chair! I have a feeling you will be thankful you did.

First Impressions…
My Great Grandmother had one that she was practically attached to. I have very fond memories of that short, little ol’ lady.
She was my babysitter, who walked me to the bus stop every day.
Grandma loved to sit from that rocking chair with her beloved poodle at her feet, while handing out cheese balls (or some other snack she had available), to her grandchildren.
She loved to watch her daytime soap operas and game shows in that chair. In fact, the only time she ever really left that rocking chair, was to either make us kids lunch, go grab her snacks, take me/bring me home to the bus stop, or use the bathroom.
She was the very first representation of a rocking chair, in my life.
Beautiful Woman, she was.
Rocking Chairs & Babies…
I rocked my baby to sleep in a rocking chair plenty of times…one that was handed down through my husband’s family. It was a God Send in a few ways. My son would wake up in the middle of the night routinely. Because I was already exhausted handling an infant all day, that rocking chair brought much needed rest to a tired mama at the same time it put a baby back to sleep. All I had to do was put him in my arms, settle in, put him to the teet, and slumber came along nicely for both of us.
We still have that rocking chair in one room of the house.
I have been fortunate enough to spend a lot of moments sitting beside a friend, both of us in rocking chairs on a porch, pondering the many aspects of life. We grab a cup of tea or a glass of wine, what have you, and enjoy just some relaxing time together.
Creativity, it is true, can come from the exchange of ideas!
My Rocking Chair Fetish…
I use my rocking chair for my own reasons. Yes, I do have (more than) one… And yes, it serves a purpose even now, without a baby or grandma around.
I still find a relaxation about it. I can ponder a variety of things with drink in hand, rocking my analytic tail right back into my zone. Even when stress hits here or there, that lovely rocking chair of mine, keeps me sane.
At this point, we now have 3 rocking chairs inside of our home..there are a couple outside as well! The most recent rocking chair I acquired, happened to be a gift from my husband. This one is a newer glider style model with an ottoman. For whatever reason, I guess he didn’t think I had enough of them on our property to satisfy my fetish. I don’t mind…more comfortable chairs to sit in throughout the property!
So, why don’t rocking chairs get the respect they deserve? If choosing to put a side chair in a room or anywhere really, I am more apt to choose one that rocks as opposed to one that doesn’t.
Final Appeal To The Rocking Chair…
I don’t think rocking chairs are exactly a thing of the past. There will always be a grandmother or grandfather who likes relaxing on their front porch in a rocking chair, while watching the grandchildren play. There will always be a tired mama who will rely on one to help her calm her cranky baby. And yes, there will always be that small child that grows up around a rocking chair and has decided it is one of his/her favorite pieces of furniture to play on.
While rocking chairs will always be around, I do find it fascinating to observe the furniture trends that happen within today’s society. They can range anywhere from Ikea, to nice leather furniture, to the typical recliner. However, you really don’t see folks investing in one of the most practical and useful pieces of furniture out there…The Rocking Chair.
Perhaps I’m just a bit old fashioned for my age…That’s okay. I’ll continue using every rocking chair on this property until I’ve worn them all out, and I will enjoy every moment!
For those of you who are thinking about owning one, but can’t afford the hefty price tag of a new rocking chair, check your local thrift store. You never know what hidden gems you might find!
Cheers!
